County Business Patterns: initial ACD release of 2023 data
Prepared county business statistics for comparing local industries, with establishment counts, employment, payroll and size bands.
Source edition and ACD preparation
Census released the 2023 County Business Patterns edition on June 26, 2025. It uses 2017 NAICS and the georef22 county reference for 2022–2023. The October 16, 2026 date records our capture and preparation, not a new Census reference year. This is the first paid ACD CBP release; there is no previous paid release to compare.
From the discovery sample to the full product
The internal discovery examined one industry and its compatibility with our county and NAICS products. The paid release covers every published six-digit county/industry combination in the retained county file. It adds separate published totals, 13 establishment-size bands, complete reference tables and source-row accounting. The mixed-period ACS screening ratio used in discovery is not included in this product.
What the preparation preserves
All 1,100,961 original rows have an outcome. Detail, county totals, intermediate industry aggregates, unclassified activity and statewide unassigned records remain distinguishable. Original size-band N values become blank analytical counts with statuses; published zeros remain zero. Employment and payroll retain their G/H/J noise flags. Every delivered table cell is checked against the original Census ZIP and reference files.
Using this edition
Compare three counties in the Python guide, or inspect the complete fields and sample. The fixed source edition costs $29 once. Processing improvements on these inputs are included; a genuinely new source edition may be sold separately.
