01 / KNOW THE FIT
A useful join starts
with a clear meaning.
What you can do with it
Compare counties for nonprofit planning, community research or a grant narrative. Use poverty counts to describe the scale of a population, rates to describe prevalence, and median household income as a separate measure of local economic conditions.
What one row means
county_income_poverty.csv has one record per county/equivalent. county_measures.csv contains the same seven measures in long form, one row per year × county FIPS × measure, with original source cells.
Unique keycounty_fips
How to join it
Read county_fips as five-character text. Join the wide file directly to a county list. In the long file, select a measure before joining so each county receives one record rather than seven.
Coverage, with the edges visible
All 3,144 county/equivalent identifiers in the 2024 SAIPE file, across the 50 states and DC. Estimates are available for 3,143 counties; Kalawao County, Hawaii, is explicitly missing. Connecticut uses nine planning regions. The source-row audit accounts for all 3,196 records, including 51 state/DC records and one national record excluded from the county reference. No Puerto Rico or other territories.
Keep in mind
- SAIPE supplies model-based annual estimates. It is not an ACS five-year dataset, a list of individuals, or a determination of grant eligibility or funding.
- The three poverty populations overlap: all ages, under 18, and related children ages 5–17 in families. Do not add them together. Poverty rates use the relevant poverty universe, not the full population.
- Published lower and upper 90% confidence bounds are preserved directly. They are not symmetric margins of error. Point-estimate differences alone do not establish statistical significance.
- Median household income is in 2024 dollars. County medians cannot be added or averaged into a combined median. Household income and person-level poverty use different populations.
- No county under-five estimates, school-district estimates, historical series, boundary harmonization or ZIP allocation are included. County FIPS agrees with our 2024 insurance reference, but the measures and populations differ.
Retains original text and Excel files, lossless staging and independent preparation recipes. Checks every numerical cell across both formats; uses full official Excel names after verifying FIPS; preserves leading zeros, missing statuses and confidence bounds; documents every original source row. Independent acceptance compares delivered fields against original inputs, and offline replay reproduces the release. How we prepare and version our data →
