01 / KNOW THE FIT

A useful join starts
with a clear meaning.

What you can do with it

Enrich a county service-area list for outreach research, grant preparation or market analysis. Compare the number of uninsured people and the uninsured rate, retaining uncertainty and the population definition.

What one row means

county_summary.csv selects one under-65, both-sexes, all-races, all-incomes record per county. county_detail.csv contains one row per year, county, age group, sex and income category. The summary is a documented selection from the detail, not an aggregation.

Unique key
county_fips

How to join it

Keep county_fips as five-character text. The summary gives one match per county. Before joining detail, select one age_code, sex_code and income_code; overlapping categories otherwise multiply rows and double-count people.

Coverage, with the edges visible

All 358,416 county rows in the retained 2024 source, covering 3,144 county/equivalent identifiers with 114 combinations each. Summary estimates are usable for 3,143 counties; Kalawao County, Hawaii, is explicitly missing. Coverage is the 50 states and DC, with nine Connecticut planning regions. The 44,370 original state rows are excluded with a complete source-row audit. No Puerto Rico or other territories.

Keep in mind

  • SAHIE is a model-based annual estimate for the poverty universe, not a patient list, enrollment database, or the full county population. No age-65-plus coverage or insurance-type breakdown.
  • Age bands and income groups overlap; do not sum them indiscriminately. Under-19 estimates are both-sex only. County race/ethnicity breakdowns are not supplied.
  • Margins of error use 90% confidence. A zero MOE means less than one person or 0.1 percentage point, not certainty. Source rounding can prevent exact reconciliation; point-estimate differences alone do not establish significance.
  • The within-income percentages and all-income-denominator percentages answer different questions. Program eligibility is not inferred from these categories.
  • County identifiers agree with our 2024 ACS county geography for the 50 states/DC, but SAHIE annual and ACS five-year periods and universes differ. No boundary harmonization, ZIP allocation, hospital mapping or historical series is included.
WHAT MAKES IT ACTUALLY CLEAN

Retains exact source bytes and lossless staging; preserves FIPS text; decodes category labels; separates county summary and demographic detail; keeps values, source cells and missing statuses; retains every published margin of error. Independent acceptance compares every delivered source-derived cell and accounts for all input rows. How we prepare and version our data →
