01 / KNOW THE FIT

A useful join starts
with a clear meaning.

What you can do with it

Enrich hospital research lists, provider-market studies or regional service plans with facility attributes and selected patient-experience measures. Start from CMS facility IDs and compare the same survey question and observation period across your portfolio.

What one row means

The main table has one row per CMS facility ID. Patient experience is a separate table with one row per facility, measure and observation period. A measure identifies a specific answer category, linear mean or survey-star score; the hospital overall rating remains a separate attribute.

Unique key
facility_id

How to join it

Import facility_id and ZIP codes as text, preserving zeros and letter suffixes. Filter patient_experience.csv to your measure_id and period_start/period_end before joining for one row per hospital. Keep longer relationships deliberately when analyzing multiple measures. CMS facility IDs are not NPIs.

Coverage, with the edges visible

All 5,419 facilities in the retained CMS General Information file. Of these, 3,174 have overall ratings and 2,245 do not. The HCAHPS table contains 325,720 observations: 68 measures for each of 4,790 facilities, including unavailable results. The remaining 629 facilities are absent from that survey file. The published scope includes the states, territories and hospital types present in CMS’s files.

Keep in mind

  • This is a dated CMS edition, not a live hospital directory. Published ownership and contact details are retained as supplied, without independent current verification.
  • Overall hospital stars, patient-survey stars, answer percentages and linear means are different measures. The overall rating combines domains with different measurement periods; it does not inherit the survey period.
  • Unavailable and inapplicable values remain distinct from zero. Footnotes may qualify published scores. Completed-survey counts and response rates repeat across measures; do not sum them across survey rows.
  • No NPI crosswalk, county-FIPS assignment, geocoding, historical facility mergers, individual patient data or full set of underlying CMS quality measures is included. County names and ZIPs alone do not establish a geographic join.
WHAT MAKES IT ACTUALLY CLEAN

Keeps the facility and survey grains separate; verifies every survey’s parent and repeated facility attributes; preserves identifier text; standardizes observation dates; adds blank-safe numeric fields, explicit statuses and original cells; resolves CMS footnotes. Independent acceptance compares every delivered source-derived field with the original CSVs. Retained raw, staging and preparation layers support offline reprocessing.
