01 / KNOW THE FIT
A useful join starts
with a clear meaning.
What you can do with it
Group an NDC-coded research or analytics table by therapeutic class, inspect RxNorm matches, or build consistent rollups across the ATC hierarchy.
What one row means
One classified FDA package NDC / ATC-4 code pair, with its RxCUI and parent ATC levels. This edition has one class per classified NDC; the pair remains the unique key.
Unique keyndc_code + atc4_code
How to join it
Import ndc_code as text and match the original FDA hyphenated package format. Check your own code format and unmatched records before aggregating. The included lookup-status CSV accounts for every input NDC.
Coverage, with the edges visible
162,167 of 256,748 distinct FDA package codes receive a classification (63.2%), across 632 ATC-4 groups. Unclassified inputs remain visible in the lookup-status table, rather than disappearing from the denominator.
Keep in mind
- NLM product classes reflect a most-common indication. This is not an exhaustive list of indications, ingredients, or historical mappings.
- Includes ATC levels 1–4, not ATC-5 codes or defined daily doses. A missing current match does not prove no other mapping exists.
- Prepared for research and analytics, not clinical decisions. FDA directory listing does not establish FDA approval.
We resolve FDA package NDCs through NLM’s active Current Prescribable Content, then use direct ATCPROD membership of the resolved product. Ambiguous matches are excluded and recorded; source label case and NDC hyphens are preserved.

Real rows. Before you buy.
These are the first three rows from the delivered CSV, showing 4 of 11 fields. The free download contains the first five rows and all 11 fields; it is a format sample, not a coverage test.

05 / DATES THAT MEAN SOMETHING
Sources, versions & changes.
